Introducing ALLeX
ALLeX is a research lab. Our long-term goal is to read how a person thinks, non-invasively and in everyday life, and to give that understanding back in a form the person can use to think better.
We are starting with a device: a wearable shaped like headphones rather than a helmet, carrying ultrasound, electrical sensors and a small chip that computes on the head. It reads the state of a mind, not the content of a thought. How fast, how deep, how focused, what carries a feeling. This is a narrower promise than most of the field makes, and we chose it because it is one we can show.
Two stages
The first stage reads and does nothing else. A language model receives the state as context, so its answers fit the mind receiving them. The second stage, some years out, builds a model of the person on top of what the first stage measured and begins, carefully, to work with them: naming what a task demands, where attention goes, what is worth doing.
Why we are writing this down
Because we want to be held to it. This blog will carry what we have measured, what we got wrong, and what we changed. Not every post will be good news.
